01 · The read

Where the 44 seconds are

Your 2025 race was aerobically well run and tactically expensive. Cardiac drift across the whole race was only 1.1%, which is excellent. But the pace pattern says you spent the opening mile buying a deficit you then paid back with interest between miles 3 and 5.

The strongest running of the day came after 6 miles. That is capacity you carried to the finish instead of spending it in the middle.

That pattern is the whole reason a stretch goal is even on the table. You are not being asked to run faster than you have ever run. You are being asked to distribute the same effort differently, and to stop handing back the free speed this course gives you.

It also means the discipline matters more now, not less. Swinging for a time above your current projection off a thin base and going out hard is not a bold race, it is a scratched one.

02 · The course

One climb, then five miles of gravity

Point to point from Run-Fit Sports on Forsyth Road down into town: about 250 ft of climbing against 430 ft of descent, for a net drop of 179 ft. Almost all the climbing is in one place, between 0.3 and 0.6 miles, at roughly 4%.

The only real hill arrives four minutes in, when you feel great and your heart rate is already elevated from the start line. That is the trap.
03 · The plan

Even effort, not even pace

Targets below are grade-adjusted from a flat-equivalent 7:58/mi, using an asymmetric model: uphill costs about 20 s/mi per 1% of grade, downhill returns about 11. Downhill gives back less than uphill takes, so a net-downhill course is worth less than it looks.

Mile 1 in 8:35 to 8:45. This is the hard instruction, because you will be 35 seconds behind last year's split and it will feel like the race is getting away. It is not. The clock buys that back on the descent, and the alternative is arriving at mile 2.5 already in debt, which is exactly what happened in 2025.

Heart rate is the real governor. Cap it at 172 through the climb. Let it settle to 176–179 from mile 1 to mile 5. After mile 5 it does not matter what it reads. Last year you were at 177 by mile 1.5 and 179 by mile 2.5, which left you nothing to give when the course stopped helping.

Two quarter miles where free time is sitting on the table. From 4.00 to 4.25 the road falls at 4.3% and you ran 8:17/mi. From 4.75 to 5.00 it falls 2.7% and you ran 8:14. Both should be under 7:35. Let the legs turn over and stop braking.

04 · The escape hatch

The mile 3 checkpoint

A swing needs a place to stop swinging. By mile 3 you will have run the climb, the fast descent, and the second riser just before the mile 3 marker, which is enough of the course to know whether 49:48 is live. Read two numbers there and commit to one of two races.

This is the number that actually decides it. On schedule but at 182 means you are borrowing against the last three miles.

Back off to this and hold it home. You finish around 51:00, which still beats your projection and beats fading to 53.

Backing off at mile 3 is not the failure case. Blowing through mile 3 at 182 bpm and walking part of mile 6 is the failure case, and the difference between those two races is about two and a half minutes on the clock. You are allowed to take the swing precisely because you have somewhere to land.

The one thing that overrides all of it: if the morning is warmer than about 75°F, the 49:48 version is off the table before the gun. Add 10 to 15 seconds per mile to everything, race the effort, and take what the day gives you.

05 · The evidence

Why this is a swing and not a projection

Twenty-two runs since July 18. The trajectory is genuinely good. The absolute level is not yet where 49:48 lives, and it is worth going in knowing which of those two things the clock measures.

Two independent efforts land within 33 seconds of each other, at 52:01 and 52:34 flat. Give this course its 45 seconds of net drop and both say 51:15 to 51:50. A third signal agrees: your 25:27 5K converts to almost the same place. Three lines of evidence pointing at one number is usually the number.

The gap is not subtle. Your fastest 6-mile run in the whole log is 8:54/mi and the target asks for 7:58. Taper and race day are reliably worth 15 to 25 seconds a mile. This asks for 48.

59 seconds per mile faster in six weeks at the same heart rate. Efficiency up 11.6% since August 1. This is the case for the swing: a six-week-old projection may already be describing a slower runner than the one who shows up Monday.

Your own read agrees with the chart: you have felt better running these last two weeks than before. That matters. Subjective effort and objective efficiency moving together is a stronger signal than either alone, and the week of Aug 24 was also your highest-volume week of the block at 16.2 miles. More running, run better, felt better. The projection is built on six weeks; the last two are the best two.

It still does not close a 48 second per mile gap. But it is the reason the checkpoint at mile 3 exists rather than a flat refusal. Go find out.

The thing to fix after Monday

Fifteen of your twenty-two runs average 160 bpm or higher. Only four are under 150. Your median run averages 162 against a threshold of 166. You are running almost everything at or near threshold, on twelve miles a week, with a longest run of 6.76 miles. That is why your heart rate drifts 15 beats over a steady long run, and it is the ceiling on the sub-2 half. The highest-yield change available to you is more miles run much slower: 20 to 25 a week with most of it at 10:30 to 11:00 pace. It will feel like going backwards for a month. It is not.

06 · Race week

Four miles, then race

You average twelve miles a week. A taper has to be small in proportion to that, not in proportion to what a higher-volume runner would cut. Everything below adds to about four miles before the gun, which is a normal light week for you.

1.5–2 mi easy + 4 strides. Do not skip the strides. Total rest is what makes legs feel flat on race day; twenty seconds fast costs nothing and keeps the nervous system awake.

Rest. Lay out the kit. Nothing new on race day. Hydrate through the afternoon, not just at dinner.
Mon Sep 7
Race, 8:00 am. 16–20 oz with electrolytes on waking. Warm up a full 15 min with 3 strides, finishing 8 minutes before the gun. First mile 8:35–8:45, heart rate under 172. Then race it.

The long warm-up is not filler. Your morning runs show heart rate going from 62 to 160 inside four minutes, while your one evening run held 138 at a faster pace. Whatever that gap is made of, hydration, fasted state, or a cold start, fifteen minutes of easy jogging beforehand is the cheapest way to arrive at the line already on the far side of it instead of paying for it during the climb.
